Are You Afraid of the Dark? by Sidney Sheldon

Book Description :-
Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a 2004 novel and the last novel by bestselling thriller writer
Sidney Sheldon.Around the world – New York, Berlin, Paris, Denver - men are being killed, and later their spouses/lovers are being eliminated systematically - all in such a way that the deaths appear as accidents or suicides, but never murder. The only common factor between these disparate individuals is that they were all brilliant, capable men employed by the Kingsley International Group, one of the world’s largest think-tanks.
Tanner Kingsley, the head of this respected institution, is passionate about preserving the environment, and his arguments are supported by the growing trend of unusually destructive weather plaguing the globe. Two of the murdered men’s wives, Diane Stevens and Kelly Harris, escape being killed and soon find themselves on the run from a killers who is proving to be omnipotent, one who knows their moves even before they do. How they keep eluding death time after time despite their mutual antipathy, even as bit by bit they piece together scattered clues to find a deadly secret to protect which the killer won’t stop at any cost, forms the crux of the story.
Sidney Sheldon has long been a master at crafting stories of mystery and suspense that capture readers’ imaginations and sweep them away into a world of intrigue and murder; so it is with Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The plot development is good and Sheldon smoothly advances the tale and tension from various viewpoints and locations. Unfortunately, halfway through the book, the whodunit part of the suspense is given away and this reduces the interest factor somewhat. One of the story’s highlights is the realistically depicted emotional turmoil in which the two central characters Diane and Kelly find themselves in, as they struggle to reconcile to the loss of their husbands even as they avoid being killed again and again; their continuing hostility toward each other gives the story an additional, unsuspected edge. Sheldon has done his research well, and without giving much away, suffice to say that the deadly secret hidden in the story is fast on its way to becoming a reality. That makes the story all the more authentic and scary. However, the story lacks overall punch, a thrill that had become the trademark of Sidney Sheldon novels. But, despite all its flaws, this book remains an interesting read.

Book Description :-
The Sky Is Falling is a 2001 novel by
Sidney Sheldon. The main character to this book is Dana Evans, an anchorwoman for the press, who was also featured, though not as a main character, in another of Sidney Sheldon's book, The Best Laid Plans.
The story starts off with a prologue, a mysterious auction that involves a huge amount of money. Dana Evans had just came back from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is rushing to a meeting with the last member of the Winthrop family, Gary Winthrop. The story starts to get complicated when, a few hours after the interview with Dana, Gary Winthrop was shot and killed by some thieves who were, supposedly, stealing some paintings - the rest of the Winthrop family were killed in a series of suspicious "accidents" a few months beforehand. Although most viewed this tragic row of events as accidents, Dana was the exception. Taylor and Madeline Winthrop, Gary's parents, perished in a fire that burnt down their house, Paul Winthrop died when his car drove off a cliff, and Julie Winthrop died in a skiing accident. Dana couldn't believe that accidents had wiped out one of the most prominent families in the world. She began to investigate, delving deeper and deeper into the family's secrets.
Meanwhile, Kemal, the crippled boy (he only has one arm) Dana found in Sarajevo, caused trouble and launched into fights at school, because some bullies, mainly a boy named Ricky Underwood, kept insulting Dana. Dana was called to school a couple of times to manage Kemal. Kemal was finally expelled after he hospitalized his tormentor, Ricky.
Jeff Connors, Dana's fiance, is also occupied, looking after Rachel Stevens, his ex-wife, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Rachel is a model, one of the highest paid in the world, and was Jeff's wife for 4 years. Due to Dana's investigations, and him taking care of Rachel, they postponed their wedding to a later date.
Dana couldn't find anything remotely suspicious about the Winthrop family and was on the verge of giving up when she unexpectedly stumbled upon a case against Taylor Winthrop, while searching the internet for apartments for her, Jeff and Kemal. The case was filed by Joan Sinisi and was later dropped for some mysterious reason. Dana soon found out that Taylor Winthrop paid a huge settlement for the case to be dismissed. To Dana's astonishment, Joan refused to talk about the case, and asked her to leave. When Dana finally persuaded Joan to tell her, Joan "accidentally" fell down from her balcony and died. Her death was ruled out as an accident, even though its impossible for her to fall out of her balcony accidentally, due to a four foot wall preventing it. The maid taking care of Joan left after the "accident", to visit her family.
As she, determined despite the dangers, followed her leads, Dana befriended Roger Hudson was a former senate leader and billionaire who had some strange connection to Taylor Winthrop, and his wife, Pamela Hudson. They helped Dana a lot on her investigation, although Roger Hudson was very uncomfortable when Dana started talking about Taylor Winthrops. Dana became friends with the couple when Kemal broke an extremely expensive vase, she'd been forced to take Kemal with her when he got into major trouble at school, and the Hudsons told her not to worry.
She also made an enemy of General Victor Booster, head of the FRA, when she interviewed him. He screamed himself hoarse, insulting the media and told her to leave before she even got ten words out. Booster's aide, Jack Stone, became her friend when he helped her out, by warning her off Booster's abruptness and anger towards the media.
Dana had known that there was a strange link between the murder of Taylor Winthrop and Russia. To find the link she traveled all the way to Moscow to meet the Russian commissioner Sasha Shahandoff. But he was not ready to talk to her anything about the winthrops. However Boris Shahandoff, his brother was about to say something but every time Sasha made him quiet. Also Dana had faced a few threats to her life in Moscow and felt somebody following her. Finally she returned back to Washington. Soon she received a note that someone from Moscow wanted to share with her the mystery about Winthrops. She shared the information with Hudson family and asking them to take care of Kemal she left for Moscow. There she met Sasha Shahandoff, who agreed to tell her the mystery.
Sasha took her to an underground city called Kyranosk-26.To her utmost surprise, the city was 600 feet below mountain and was like a complete city. The city was completely cut off from the outside world. It was the city where plutonium was being produced by Russia to an extent that a nuclear bomb can be made in three days. Knowing this Taylor Winthrop thought to make use of situation. Persuading the white house, he got himself appointed as the ambassador to Russia and started selling plutonium to China, Pakistan, Iran etc and started making too much money. However one of his partners wanted all the money for himself. So he killed the entire Winthrop family so that no trace could be found. But Sasha did not name the partner and asked her, if she would help him get out of Russia, as there were threats to his life in Russia and then he would tell the partners name. He gave her address and told her to keep the secret and discuss her plan then.
Dana knew no one in Moscow, so she asked Hudson to arrange for something for Sasha Shahandoff. Hudson told how he would make the arrangements. But when Dana went to Sasha’s place she found him dead. She was shocked. When she came out of the apartment, a gun was aimed at her from the top story of the building on other side. However she missed it as a bus came in between. She ran for her life .Trying to set link between events, she realized that except Hudson no one knew about Sasha!!
She called Jack stone telling him that she doubted Hudson and asked her to take care of Kemal till she was back. However, there she again faced life threats and came to know that Jack stone was also involved. Some how she managed to reach back to Washington but when she reached there Kemal was not there.
She received a call from Hudson to be at their place, if she wanted Kemal to be alive. She rushed there; where caeser, Hudson assistant was asked to take her away n kill her. By that time Jeff and Matt Baker (Dana’s Boss) had come to know of the situation. They reached there and managed to save Dana and killed Caesar. Kemal who was locked in school basement was put on fire. Jeff managed to save Kemal as well.
The same moment the Hudson had planned to leave the country. Their plane was just about to take off, when General Victor Booster, getting to know the situation asked the plan not to be allowed to take off. However the Hudsons inside asked the pilot to take off at gun point. It had just flown high in air when it got blasted and smiling back in the fields was Boris Shahandoff !!!

Book Description :-
Memories of Midnight is a 1990 novel written by Sidney Sheldon. It is a sequel to Sheldon's The Other Side of Midnight. The plot of Memories of Midnight takes off from the ending of The Other Side of Midnight, where Catherine Douglas is recovering in a convent. The world thinks that she has been killed by her husband Larry Douglas and his mistress Noelle Page, except Constantin Demiris, known as Costa. But Catherine wants to discover herself and know who she is. The only thing she knows is that her name is Catherine Alexander. She requests to see the world outside the convent in order to reveal her past. This request is granted by the Sister of the convent, but only after getting the approval from their mentor Constantin Demiris.
It is there in Greece that she realizes that her husband and his mistress tried to kill her but didn’t succeed as she was still alive. She remembers them trying to drown her and this becomes a recurring dream. When she tells all this to Costa, he is a bit angry as he didn’t want her uncovering her past but anyway he wishes to dispose her of as she is the last link to the case in which Larry and Noelle were wrongly accused of killing her. So he sends her off to London to work there in one of his various offices.
Constantin Demiris seems like a benefactor to Catherine as she has no knowledge of what Constantin Demiris has in plan for her.
Trouble starts brewing when Frederick Stavros starts feeling guilty for sending Larry and Noelle to their death as he was their lawyer and they were all tricked into pleading guilty by Napoleon Chotas but he dies shortly after confiding this news to a priest who after his death tells this news to a employee working in the office of Spyros Lambrou who is the brother of Costa’s wife Melina. This news reaches Spyros Lambrou who uses this news to destroy Costa as Costa had maltreated his wife, Spyros’ sister.
This is when Napoleon Chotas starts fearing his own death and hence leaves a package with a prosecuting attorney Peter Demonides and sends a tape referring to this to Costa but the next day Chotas’ house is burned and he dies and the package is delivered to Costa by Peter who starts working for him. This is when Catherine finds a good friend in Kirk Reynolds who is in love with her and wants to marry her but Catherine is a bit reluctant. She confides in him that her husband and his mistress attempted to kill her and were killed for it. While Kirk reassures her by saying that of the little he knows about Greek law he is confident that there law doesn’t sentence to death anyone charged on account of attempted murder but also adds that he will make sure by asking one of his acquaintance, Peter Demonides. He relates Catherine’s story to him and the next day he dies.
Then Spyros tries to destroy Costa by narrating this incident to a drug dealer, Tony Rizzoli and advices him to trick Costa into taking one of his drug shipments to USA. But Constantin Demiris kills Tony and destroys his shipment very cleverly and then threatens Spyros by telling him ¬¬that he will destroy him but will first take care of his sister. When Spyros tells this to Melina, she assures him by saying that she can take care of herself. Her brother’s house is attacked but he and his wife survive the attcack. This is when she becomes confident that Costa wants to destroy them. Hence, she kills herself and fakes it in such a way that it seems that Constantin Demiris has murdered her. While on the other side Costa has ordered the killing of Catherine Alexander. In lieu of the murder Costa gets arrested and the only one who can save him is Sypros Lambrou who can give an alibi to the murder but he won’t do so as he detests Constantin Demiris and wants him dead. This is when Napoleon Chotas makes a reappearance after mysteriously surviving the fire which burned his house and fights the case of Constantine Demeiris. He convinces Spyros into giving witness to Costa saying that instead of having him dead it will be better if he forces him to live in poverty and this will be done by Costa as he will transfer all the assets of his company to Spyros. But on the other hand Costa and Chotas had already planned that the assets of Costa’s company will first be shifted to a firm owned by Napoleon Chotas himself.
On the other hand Catherine goes into psychoanalysis but in turn falls in love with the doctor Alan Hamilton who also falls in love with her. This is when 3 men arrive in London to study the operation taking place there and they all seem pretty weird and she has a bad feeling about them but it is not until she is to be killed that she realizes that it is not the 3 men but the office boy who came along with them who has come to kill her. He tries to kill her by locking and tying her up in the basement and turning up the thermostat of the boiler which will explode when it reaches 400 degree Celsius but she manages to survive by hiding in the bomb shelter. She comes to know the truth about Costa and also the fact that he was convicted. She marries Alan.
While Constantin Demiris is being tried for a murder he didn’t commit but on the last day of the gruesome 10 day trial Spyros Lambrou witnesses setting Constantin Demiris free. It is on the way to Napaleon’s home does he confide in Costa that even he liked Noelle Page but he still helped him in killing her and starts driving faster and also tells him that he has donated all the assets of his company to the convent and that is when he flings the car over the cliff down the steep mountainside.
“ The car tumbles end over end until it finally crashes in the sea. There is a tremendous explosion and then a deep silence. It was over.” (quoted from the book Memories of Midnight by Sidney Sheldon)

If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon

Book Description :-
If Tomorrow Comes is a 1985 novel by Sidney Sheldon.
Tracy Whitney is on top of the world. Young, beautiful, and intelligent, she is about to marry into wealth and glamour. A late-night phone call from New Orleans, informs her that her mother has committed suicide. Betrayed by her own innocence, Tracy winds up in prison, framed by a ruthless Mafia gang, abandoned by the man she loves, and facing a year as the "wife" of Ernestine Littlechap (Ernie), who later helps Tracy to take revenge against Pope Perry and the Judge.

Beautiful, smart, and idealistic, Tracy enters a life of hardship and violence and vows revenge against all those who harmed her. Eventually, she becomes the nanny for the prison warden's young daughter, a job that leads to her release from jail. Desperate, unable to find work as an ex-con, she turns to a well-known New York City jewelry store owner (and fence) who helps her make some fast money in a jewel heist. Escaping with the goods, Tracy has an encounter with Jeff Stevens, a master con man.
Stevens steals the jewels from Tracy, who realizes she's been had. She then cons Jeff, taking back her prize, and decides that Jeff will become another future victim of her brilliant revenge schemes. Not long after, Tracy travels to England and is introduced to Gunther Hartog, a world-class fence for valuable stolen property. Thus begins her life as one of the world's cleverest criminals. Sheldon invents some brilliant schemes, filled with humor and ingenuity (although they likely wouldn't work in reality), that Tracy pursues as she encounters Jeff Stevens again and again. Although they "hate each other," we begin to see their growing appreciation, respect, admiration, and enjoyment of their mutual competition.
Interpol, the FBI, and police departments and insurance companies around the world are trying to prevent Tracy from stealing priceless jewels, paintings, or other prizes. In every case they fail. Only Daniel Cooper, a plain-looking sociopath and insurance investigator seems capable of matching Tracy's brilliance.
Unusually, the book presents the nominal "villains" -- Tracy and Jeff -- as sympathetic and kind-hearted, while the pursuing detective, Cooper, is presented as almost psychotic; this could be a reversal of the classic "bloodhound detective" chasing a smart and elusive enemy, as in The Day of the Jackal.
In the end, Tracy and Jeff plan to meet with each other, and live together in Brazil. The story ends with a stranger Maximilian asking to be with acquaintances with Tracy.

Book Description :-
Master of the Game is a novel by Sidney Sheldon, first published in hardback format in 1982.The novel has won critical acclaim, debuting at number one on the New York Times Bestseller List. The plot of the book spans six generations, and it is based upon the fictional lives of the MacGregor/Blackwell family. The book follows the life of an entrepreneur, Kate Blackwell, and explores her family, ancestry and life. It focuses on the building of her father's company, from a small business into a multinational corporation.

The story begins with Kate Blackwell's ninetieth birthday celebrations in 1982 and is told in flashback.
The story then moves one hundred years back to the arrival of Scotsman James "Jamie" MacGregor (1865-1894) in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1883 to seek his fortune. He is soon defrauded by a wealthy Dutch storekeeper, Salomon Van Der Merwe who steals his diamonds, gets him knocked down and leaves him in the desert to die. Jamie is rescued by van der Merwe's Bantu servant Banda and in his company, Jamie plans his revenge. The two sneak into van der Merwe's heavily guarded diamond mines in the Namib Desert and succeed in stealing a load of diamonds worth a fortune. Jamie, now rugged and unrecognizable, returns to Johannesburg, cons Salomon into believing him to be a rich businessman and violates his daughter Margaret who gradually falls in love with him. However, when Jamie learns that Margaret is pregnant by him, he refuses to marry her and reveals to Salomon his true identity. The violation of Margaret's chastity becomes the talk of the town and Salomon dies soon afterwards, an unhappy man. Jamie, initially, despises Margaret, but when she gives birth to a son, Jamie develops extreme fondness of his son and consents to marrying Margaret for the sake of their young son, Jamie Jr. (1886-1893). Jamie creates a company called Kruger Brent (named after two guards who were calling each other in the diamond field) and pours all his attention into the business. Over the years, Jamie finally abandons his vendetta and genuinely begins to love Margaret. In 1892, Jamie and Margaret have a daughter Kate. A year later, Jamie, Jr. is murdered in a Bantu uprising led by Banda, causing Jamie to have a stroke from which he later dies. Margaret takes over Kruger Brent to secure Kate's future and hires a young American named David Blackwell (1870-1924), a thief who tried to rob the Kruger Brent diamond mines but was caught and employed as a company executive by Jamie out of sympathy (since he and Banda did the same thing), to aid her.
Kate grows up beautiful, strong-willed and manipulative. Having fallen in love with David Blackwell as a child she is determined to marry him, and thwarts his engagement by buying the company owned by his fiancee's father. After many years of trying Kate becomes pregnant, but when she is seven months pregnant David is killed in a mine accident, causing her to go into premature labor and give birth to a son, Anthony "Tony" Blackwell (b. 1924). Like her father before her Kate pours her life into Kruger Brent, making it a global conglomerate, and she moves to New York. She naturally expects Tony to take over Kruger Brent, but Tony is more interested in becoming an artist. While he clearly has the potential to become a world-famous artist, Kate secretly destroys Tony's career by bribing a notable French critic to give negative comments on Tony's work. Kate manipulates him into marrying Marianne Hoffmann, whose father owns a scientific patent she covets. The marriage is happy, but Marianne is told by a doctor that pregnancy is out of the question as she would be at risk for a stroke. When she tells Kate this, Kate tells her that doctors can be wrong and to go ahead with a pregnancy. In 1950, Marianne becomes pregnant, but when she is taken to the hospital to give birth her blood pressure goes out of control and she has a stroke. An emergency Caesarian section is performed and twin girls are delivered, but Marianne dies before the second girl is delivered. Her doctor tells Tony that he had warned Marianne of the dangers but that Kate told her to ignore them. The incident drives Tony mad and he tries to kill his mother in revenge. She survives the murder attempt, but Tony is committed to an institution.
Kate takes in her two granddaughters, whom she names Eve and Alexandra, to raise. Eve sees Alexandra as an interloper and repeatedly attempts to kill her starting when they are young children, taking advantage of their identical looks. Alexandra is thought to be clumsy and accident-prone as they grow up and Kate clearly favors Eve as the heir apparent to Kruger Brent, but when Eve tries to implicate Alexandra in a sex scandal Kate realizes the truth about Eve and disinherits her, giving her only a small allowance. Enraged, Eve plots revenge against both her sister and grandmother. She meets George Mellis, the black sheep of a wealthy Greek family, and seduces him into helping her. Mellis is handsome and cultured, but he is also a violent sadist and homosexual. Eve, knowing this, holds it over his head as she reveals her scheme--to get Alexandra to fall in love with and marry him, after which he will murder her and cause Kate to die of grief. Cued by Eve, Mellis woos Alexandra by being the perfect man who loves all the things she loves, and Alexandra does fall madly in love with him and they marry. Eve continues to taunt Mellis, and one night he snaps and attacks Eve, brutally assaulting her. She eventually recovers thanks to the work of a talented but mousy plastic surgeon and uses the beating to get back into her grandmother's good graces. Kate takes Eve back in and puts her back in the will, making Mellis superfluous. Eve changes tactics, fakes a scar, and begins visiting a psychiatrist pretending to be a depressed, suicidal Alexandra; the plan is that Mellis will take Alexandra out on a yacht where he'll throw her overboard and make it appear as if she killed herself. When Mellis gets on the boat with whom he believes to be Alexandra, he instead finds Eve, who stabs him to death. In the course of the investigation Eve's plastic surgeon, Dr. Keith Webster, overhears a remark about the scar on Eve's head. Having fallen in love with her, he goes to her and reminds her that he left no scar and knows that she killed Mellis. When she tries to deny it, he offers her a deal--if they are married, he won't be forced to testify against her. Eve marries him but cheats on him flagrantly with a young actor. When the actor makes a joke about laugh lines she demands that Webster repair them. Webster deliberately destroys her face and proves to be a master manipulator himself, making Eve completely dependent on him. Alexandra, meanwhile, falls in love with the psychiatrist Peter Templeton; they marry and have a son, Robert.
The book closes at Kate's ninetieth birthday party with all her relatives present. Robert, now seven, is turning into a talented pianist. Kate sees him as Kruger Brent's heir but Alexandra and Peter laugh her off. Looking around at her family, including Tony, who was released from the institution for the occasion, and a masked Eve, Kate still believes that she acted properly, even though everyone in her family has been negatively affected by her actions.

Adam Warner, married and also an attorney, has a strict rule against affairs, being married to Mary Beth, the niece of Stewart Needham, the senior partner in a very powerful New York law firm. Warner is being groomed for the Senate, with possibly a White House destination, but he can't help falling in love with Jennifer. When Adam tells Jennifer that Mary Beth has asked for a divorce, Jennifer meets with Warner's wife. Being so close to the Senate election, the two women decide it's best for Adam to wait until after the election. Mary Beth goes to bed one last time with Adam, and tricks him into making her pregnant.
Adam learns that his wife is pregnant, wins the election, and tells Jennifer that he must stay married for "a little while longer," never discovering that Jennifer, too, is pregnant. They break up, and Jennifer decides to keep the baby and become a single mom.
When her son is kidnapped, Jennifer, in desperation, turns to Michael Moretti for help. Moretti is handsome, powerful, and dangerous, and eventually seduces Jennifer. This begins a love triangle that sweeps across America's political and organized crime landscape as Jennifer, Adam, and Michael rise to become the most powerful figures in the country.
Her life soon turned into a nightmare when her son dies, due to a head injury. After the death, Jennifer's life falls apart as Michael Moretti plan to kill Adam and she had to stop him. She ended up getting shot by Michael, who finally knew of her affair with the politician, and fighting for her life. Near the end of the story, Adam Warner learns that he had a son, by Jennifer, but it was too late, because he was made the president of the United States.
In his earlier works, Sheldon is a master of plot twists, complications, and the emotional ups and downs of people's lives. "Rage of Angels" is one of his rare stories that does not have a happy ending. Despite being a somewhat pessimistic book, it's a fascinating journey into the complexities of crime and punishment, politics, and corruption. Sheldon masterfully portrays the brilliant legal strategies that make Jennifer Parker come to life as a fully believable criminal defense lawyer.

Book Description :-
A Stranger in the Mirror is a 1976 novel by Sidney Sheldon.
This book is the life story of two fictitious Hollywood celebrities-Toby Temple and Jill Castle.Toby Temple, born to a struggling German butcher and his wife in 1920s Detroit, has always wanted to make his strict mother happy. Apart from his precocious sexual prowess, he finds that he has a great talent for mimicry and parody; his mother encourages him to develop this into an entertainment career. After he is forced to leave home for his own safety (having got the daughter of a local policeman pregnant), Toby travels the country for several years as a small-time comedian, performing in cheap, filthy clubs and living frugally, always dreaming of big success and denied by indifferent showbusiness executives. Finally, aged 27, Toby seduces the crippled owner of a drama school, who introduces him to famous Hollywood agent Clifton Lawrence. Recognises Toby's talent, Lawrence coaches him for a more upmarket gig-which leads to a Las Vegas hotel act, turning out to be a huge success. Thereafter, Toby rapidly becomes a rich and famous celebrity: doing stand-up tours across America, entertaining American troops in Korea, starring in Hollywood movies, and later in his own TV show. He remains a lonely man, although he surrounds himself with a vast entourage and seduces countless women.

Meanwhile the story moves to Josephine Czinski, daughter of a single Polack seamstress in Odessa, Texas. Josephine suffers from chronic headaches due to complications during her birth, and has a deprived childhood. Nonetheless she befriends some of Odessa's rich "oil children," in whose company she acquires her lofty ambitions of movie stardom. Josephine grows to be strikingly beautiful and alluring, the envy of her wealthy friends. At 17, she becomes involved with the town's richest, most eligible bachelor, David Kenyon. However, after promising to marry her, David is then manoeuvered into a more politically convenient marriage by his sick and domineering mother; an unpleasant incident in his past further persuades him. A depressed Josephine runs away to Hollywood, changes her name to Jill Castle and seeks her fortune in the film industry. For several years she has very little luck, due mostly to her lack of experience and the surplus of attractive wannabe actresses in Hollywood. She succeeds in getting only a few tiny bit parts, whilst working a variety of other jobs. At one point, an unscrupulous boyfriend drugs and tricks her into performing in a pornographic film with a Mexican stud. After this, she is forced to accept that movie roles might best be purchased with her body. She submits to many cruel, lecherous men who repay her with small roles in films and advertisements. Still she dreams of becoming a leading lady; although, the older she gets, the less likely this appears.
The plot speeds up when Jill gets a part on "The Toby Temple Show." Toby is smitten with her, and pursues her determinedly, despite her treating him with initial indifference (unlike most other women). He arranges a major movie audition for her; when the director reports that Jill simply lacks the charisma for a leading role, she is heartbroken. Confiding her pain to Toby, she finds herself falling for him since he understands exactly how she feels, despite the 20-year age gap. He discovers a feeling for Jill which he has never experienced with any other woman; they make love, and decide to marry immediately.
Meanwhile, David Kenyon has finally divorced his unloving, selfish wife and comes looking for Josephine, whom he still loves. He arrives in Hollywood too late, seeing her wedding to Toby Temple in a newspaper.
As Toby's wife, Jill becomes a very dominating presence in Hollywood society and takes revenge on everyone who victimised her. Disliking Toby's agent, Clifton Lawrence, she gets him fired. With their happy marriage to complete his life, Toby goes on to greater showbiz triumphs than ever; his punishing performance schedule begins to wear him out. Finally, they attend the Cannes film festival, where Toby is presented with a special award. On stage, he collapses from a massive stroke.
Jill is told that her husband is permanently paralyzed. He is unable to walk or speak, and physiotherapy seems ineffective. Refusing to give up on him, Jill dismisses all medical and nursing staff and spends months looking after Toby single-handedly: feeding, bathing and dressing him, forcing him into painful exercises. Ultimately, after finding herself too weak to carry on, she is overjoyed when Toby walks again. Thenceforth, he makes a complete and remarkable recovery. When Toby returns to the screen, healthy and funnier than ever, the World rejoices his re-entry and proclaims their love to be the romance of the century. His international comeback tour is an unprecedented sensation-but, once again, he pushes himself too hard. At a hotel in Moscow, he suffers a second stroke. This time his paralysis is complete and recovery impossible.
Jill then meets David again and realises he is her true love; but as the heroic wife of the tragic Toby Temple, she can never divorce him as long as he is alive. Unwittingly, she blurts out her frustration to Toby, who (although he cannot reply) is appalled and incensed by her betrayal. Jill begins to suffer headaches again and horrible nightmares. She becomes frightened of her paralyzed husband: suspecting that, in his helpless state, he has found some eerie psychokinetic power which will enable him to harm her.
In desperation, she murders Toby by drowning him in their swimming pool-and successfully convinces everybody, except Clifton Lawrence, that his death was accidental. Jill joins David in a cruise, intending to marry him. On the ship, however, Clifton traps David into viewing Jill's old porn film. This enrages him, remembering how he once saw his own sister engaged in sex with a Mexican gardener whom he then murdered. David batters Clifton, flees and abandons Jill. Jill is left desolate, bereft of all love. Seeing an apparition of Toby on the sea, she drowns herself and joins him in the afterlife.
The story wonderfully portrays the emotional extremes of success and failure, and how people inevitably become victims of time.

Sidney Sheldon

Sidney Sheldon was an Academy Award- winning American writer.
Sheldon was born Sidney Schechtel in Chicago, Illinois, to parents of Russian Jewish ancestry, Ascher "Otto" Schechtel (1894-1967), manager of a jewelry store, and Natalie Marcus. At 10, he made his first sale, $5 for a poem. During the Depression, he worked at a variety of jobs, attended Northwestern University and contributed short plays to drama groups.
In 1937 he moved to Hollywood, California, where he reviewed scripts and collaborated on a number of B movies. After serving in the military during World War II as a pilot in the War Training Service, a branch of the Army Air Corps,Sheldon returned to civilian life and moved to New York where he began writing musicals for the Broadway stage while continuing to write screenplays for both MGM Studios and Paramount Pictures. He earned a reputation as a prolific writer; for example, at one time he had three musicals on Broadway: a rewritten The Merry Widow, Jackpot, and Dream with Music. His success on Broadway brought him back to Hollywood where his first assignment was The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay of 1947.
In 1969, Sheldon wrote his first novel, The Naked Face, which earned him a nomination for the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America in the category of Best First Novel. His next novel, The Other Side of Midnight, went to #1 on The New York Times bestseller list as did several ensuing novels, a number of which were also made into motion pictures or TV miniseries.
His novels often featured determined women who persevere in a tough world run by hostile men. The novels contained a lot of suspense and devices to keep the reader turning the page.
"I try to write my books so the reader can't put them down," he explained in a 1982 interview. "I try to construct them so when the reader gets to the end of a chapter, he or she has to read just one more chapter. It's the technique of the old Saturday afternoon serial: leave the guy hanging on the edge of the cliff at the end of the chapter."
Sheldon won an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay (1947) for The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, a Tony Award (1959) for his musical Redhead, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on I Dream of Jeannie, an NBC sitcom.
